Penzone is the sheriff for Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. Penzone was elected as the sheriff in 2016, beating long-time incumbent Joe Arpaio. In 2016 Penzone was again running against Arpaio who had served over 24 years (six years). In the general election of November 2016, Penzone defeated Arpaio by 665,478 votes (55.6 percent) to Arpaio’s 531.674 votes (44.4 44.4 %). In the campaign for his seat, Penzone declared “to refocus the agency on law enforcement and rein in taxpayer dollars previously spent on civil-rights lawsuits.” Arpaio was an unpopular figure was indicted with contempt of the court for refusing to comply with a court’s order to stop the discrimination against racial minorities Latinos.
